MUN( Model United Nations)

From the 28th of September to the 6th of December, I was involved in the MUN club.  The club was every Friday for one hour. In every club lesson, I was debating with the rest of the students in the club, the implications of the Syrian war.  Furthermore, we were debating and asking whether other countries such as USA, Russia, UK, Israel and Lebanon should get involved in the Syrian war. During the MUN club, I learned the strategies in which politicians and leaders around the world, convey a message through a specific use of terminology. In addition, I learned how to write a position paper and a resolution to be able to convey a certain audience, and for the audience to be aware of my message. I and another student in the MUN club wrote a position paper in favor of Russia. We researched on the internet, and collected all the relevant information that is connected to the Syrian war involvement of the Russian government. The one obstacle, which I had faced during the MUN club, is the lack of verbal debating, rather than the written debating of planning, researching and typing on the computer. I got bored and distracted of just typing on the computer because; I have better verbal skills than written skills.  I think I will have stayed for a longer time in the MUN club if it was mainly concentrated on the verbal aspects of how leaders and politicians deliver a spoken speech to the public. All in all, during my participation in the MUN club I had managed to develop a new skill of writing a position paper and a resolution paper. In addition, being part in the MUN club helped me to consider the ethical implications of my actions, by the use of my opinion.  At last, I learned how to work in a group, when I wrote, the position paper together with another student.

The sample papers I got during the MUN club:

The Question of Chemical Weapons Trades:
Russia sees that it is necessary to create an agreement with the United States that the Syrian government surrenders all chemical weapons. However, Russia believes that the Assad regime is a mean of stability to the country and only agrees to stop the trade of chemical weapons, if no force is used against Syria. As defined in UN General Assembly, Syria shall submit their chemical weapons by middle of next year, established by the United States and Russia, under a contract, which:
a.     States the full list of the chemical weapons held by Syria, and
b.     Informs that all chemical sites must be emptied before the end of November; and
c.      Establishes a guarantee of elimination of chemical weapons.
Russia sustains an economic and diplomatic relationship with Syria since 1971, providing access to naval facilities, arm sales, military and intelligence cooperation. Russia hopes that the Syrian government will continue to deflect international pressure. Russia opposes critical resolution of the Syrian government and does not intend to involve the Russian military in the conflict. However, Russia believes the crisis in Syria should end by a peace conference between the United States and the Bashar-al-Assad government.

The Hope Ward - Fun Run 2013 Reflection

This is my first time participating in a fun run event of the MTN organization, The Hope Ward - a charity non-profit organization within International Hospital Kampala that provides free of charge health services for those who cannot afford to pay for medical resources such as medicine tablets, machines and doctor checks.
The fun run consists of two races to be involved in:
To walk 5 km or to run 10 km. I chose to walk 5 km.At the first 2 km I was walking, but I wanted to finish the walk in a quicker time so I ran the rest of the 3 km.
In total I had finished the race in 48 minutes.
I think I could have done the 10 km run if I had practiced before and had a steady fitness level.
Usually I don’t like to run and I always stop in the middle but when I started to run I didn't walk at all, and afterwards I felt good with my body.
The fun run for me was a small accomplishment of succeeding to run and walk, but I had contributed to a greater cause by participating and being part of resolving a global issue, which can help people who really need a medical or any other support.
All in all, I engaged with issues of global importance by going to the fun run and participating in it.
Also I had increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth by starting to run regularly, and helping the society more often, by being involved in activities which donate money to a good cause.

ESL(English as s Second Language) tutoring activity

From the 20th of May to the 15th of June every Friday, I had tutored a foreign Chinese student called John the Anglophone language (English). Every tutoring lesson we read books, had oral English practices such as listening to songs or speeches on the internet, and talked about his life in school.I decided to take this activity because, I also had been in this situation of learning the English language and it was very difficult as it took me a lot time to fit in school. Now since I am experienced for what it takes to learn a new language, I decided to help this particular student, supporting him in the process of learning and fitting in school. This particular tutoring activity gave me a different self perception which is to help the environment, and the people around you, for them to feel happy to wake up every day with a big smile on their face wanting to go to school.

In conclusion, I enjoyed and extracted extra effort in planning and organizing the tutoring lessons because I was in the same situation as John 4 years ago so I tried to give him the best support that I can give him. At last, I showed perseverance and commitment during the lessons, even at times when the student John didn't want to participate in my lessons I pushed myself, to persuade him and keep him in the class.

Business manager productive team

A theatre play has been performed on the 10th and 12th   of June by the senior students (IB1). The theatre play was consisted by the two plays: The Island and the Dumbwaiter.
I helped by taking the responsibility of designing the tickets and the posters as well as promoting the show, posting the posters around school, and selling the tickets. Furthermore, I painted the stage of the show and organized some of the props on stage. This was a creative activity as taking the risk of designing the tickets and posters due to the fact that I am not an IT (information technology) person.
However, the design turned out to be interesting and attractive as all students, teachers and parents who saw the posters and tickets design, said that it captured their eye. I surprised myself of being a creative and kind of a business man who designs, promotes and sells tickets, managing a whole theater play, a task which helped me to develop a new skill. Furthermore, I managed to show perseverance and commitment to my tasks by being loyal and responsible for the drama production. In addition I managed to sell approximately 145 tickets, for both nights which is a worth of  725,250 UGX ( 290 US$). All the money raised went to the Cancer Charity Foundation, located in Bugalobi district, Industrial road, Uganda.

In a nutshell, I learned that if I really want to achieve something and I am patient and determined to accomplish, a particular goal it turns out to be excellent.

I.B graduation branch

On the 22 th and the 24 th of May, I cooked breakfast for the I.B graduated students, together with my class mates. I managed the kitchen with another student in my class planning, organizing and coordinating the right dishes’ making sure everything gets ready in time. I really enjoyed cooking breakfast for the I.B graduated students, making them feel good and happy in their last day of school. This particular activity gave me more confidence and potential to take risks and to be more of a leader, who plans and manages activities for the society and for the good feeling of myself. The end result, was that the breakfast, had been very successful and everyone who tasted the food, said it was very delicious. The achievements and the comments of the I.B graduated students made me feel proud and happy for them, and for myself.

All in all, I managed to plan the recipe, for the I.B graduated students and make everything work successfully.

Poetry Evening

On Thursday evening the 25th of April, there was an anthology of student poetry. Whereby, each student who wanted to read his poem reads, in front of the audience of parents, teachers and students. My poem was about women’s day which describes the difficulty of women in today’s world.  The poem I wrote, explains in a metaphoric way the low status of women around the world titled as “I am”. The reason I wrote about the difficulty of women around the world is to pass a message to the audience, showing them how women, are an important part of our world the mother, the wife, the fundamental person in each house. The idea of writing about the difficult lives of women came from my geography lessons, learning about the inequality between men and women, and how the women gave up their personal lives, for us the sons, the daughters and for the husbands. Therefore, my goal was to express my thoughts by writing and depicting to the public, a global issued by the use of poetic devices. Overall, I really enjoyed and felt proud of reading my poem in front of the all school.

In conclusion, reading my poem increased my confidence, by undertaking the challenge of reading in front of the whole school, and showing perseverance and commitment. At last, I proved myself that I can take the challenge of reading my poem in front of a big audience. It was worth it, when several people told me that my poem was wonderful and interesting to listen to.

Prom Preparation

Two weeks, before the prom evening, me and my friends from class, brought tools and materials to make props and designs for the function. The prom theme was the “Beatles”, so we made peace signs, sprayed bicycles and designed flower decorations by sticking it into sponges. I made all the peace signs by hula hoops and wood sticks. I was cutting and shaping the peace signs, in the hula hoops by stapling it inside. After wards, I sprayed each peace sign with a different colour. The reason I chose to help and organize the prom is because, I wanted to learn how to work collaboratively with others. There were some problems of planning, which resulted in doing all the decorations in a stressed time. However, it was more enjoyable for me, to experience the organization and pressure of being responsible for a whole function. To end with, I felt satisfied and proud of myself in taking part in planning and organizing the prom. Overall, the prom evening was a success and a marvelous function, as some of the guests complemented me for the decorations I made.
